[USA] LEGO.com F1 Building Competition!
Posted by CapnRex101,
A wide variety of LEGO F1 cars are available this year, featuring all current Formula 1 teams and covering all age groups.
To mark the occasion, LEGO.com is hosting a competition for children to construct their own LEGO Formula 1 car, potentially winning one of twenty available copies of 60443 F1 Pit Stop & Pit Crew with Ferrari Car. The competition is now open to entrants aged 6-12 in the US and will close on May 26th. Parents can find more information about the contest on LEGO.com.
Brickset was invited to produce an example entry for the competition and I thought a Classic Space-themed model was a natural direction to go!
Classic Space actually makes the leap to Formula 1 quite smoothly, as the wings of 497 Galaxy Explorer readily translate to side pods on a Formula 1 car, while its tail influenced my design for the vehicle's rear wing and the twin thrusters mounted underneath.
In addition, I noted a slight resemblance between a Formula 1 car's front wing and the nose of the mysterious 1526, a prototype set Huw found in the LEGO vault in Billund. I added some trans-yellow 1x1 slopes to extend the wing and I like to imagine these house a couple of tiny alien camera operators inside, taking the nose cameras attached to modern F1 cars to the next level!
The full terms and conditions for the competition and entry instructions are available on LEGO.com. A similar competition will run in other countries later this year, including the UK and Canada in June.
What would your fantasy F1 car look like? Let us know in the comments.

Brick built aesthetics will always be my favorite.
I'd love to see someone build a Castle F1 car with wagon wheels for tires.
Those rear wheels aren’t the right size! Ha ha
Not sure if it complies to all the regulations, but very cool nonetheless!
That link does not work in Poland :(
I love this! I can't remember seeing any of your MOCs before @capnrex101, you've got a talent!
Why is F1 being pushed so hard? I’m not a sports guy so I don’t understand.

Yes please give us an article on your MOCs!
Love this :)

The link won't work anywhere except the USA at the moment.
Why starting in the USA? Europe is the home of F1?

Don't understand that either.
At least those times when I was in the US (and I still was a big F1 fan back then), no one I talked to about racing was interested in F1.
Indycar and NASCAR, yes, drag racing too, but F1?
Weird.
But that Classic Space themed racecar MOC looks really cool.

Presumably starting with customers they want to attract, rather than those they already have!
The link works in the Netherlands. However you have just two days left and you can win 60444

But why try to attract people with something they don't care about?
If LEGO tried to attract me by offering say a competition about baseball, I would say leave me alone, give me something interesting.

The USA has held more races than any other country, 80 in total, and was part of the inaugrual 1950 season. So not so sure anywhere can call themselves the home of F1.
*slow clap* Great example, CapnRex!
I don't know much about F1, but I'm... pretty sure that cars aren't allowed to have rocket thrusters. Cool MOC, nonetheless!
Folks shouldn't underestimate the size of the F1 market in the US; while there might be less hard-core "traditional" fans there has been a huge increase in the number of casual fans in the last 10 years.
Whatever your opinion is of DTS it has pulled in a ton of folks into F1, including non-traditional demographics. They might not be all able to differentiate between a pull-rod and a push-rod setup or speak to the intricacies of an FP2 run-plan (probably many casual fans worldwide can't either!) but they sure as heck love the rivalries and stories and the spectacle - and personally I'm just glad more people love a hobby that I do no matter at what level!
Coupled with the size of the USA market it makes sense to me why it was pushed out here - but I do hope it will be available world-wide as well - the more the merrier!

It's a competition for children, with the prize being a junior set, so obviously aiming to get younger, open minded, potential F1 fans interested. I'm sure Lego would realise that you were a lost cause.

I think that Italy has held the most (107), followed by Germany, UK & US (all on 79 on 21st January 2025, so those numbers are slightly out of date). The first World Championship race was held at Silverstone on 13th May 1950.
I agree with your point that probably no one place can call itself "The Home of F1"... :-)
NPU on the doors above the drivers head
Classic Space + F1 = Beautiful !

I wonder how many dads will be entering their own designs in their kid's name.

Which regulations? Current ones, or the ones in the far-flung future?
@CCC:
"I don't get it. Why did we get so many beer-themed entries in a contest for kids?"
Spacecar, SPACEcar, SPACECAR!!!...Sorry, what were we talking about again...:)
Really like this, reminds of ya' old 'Racers' game; can't wait to see 'Castle', 'Pirates', and other themes...and it's STILL better than NASCAR:D
@CapnRex101 nice moc! Please more!

Those from a long, long time ago, in a galaxy far away obviously!

All I will say is, in space, no one can hear you cha cha cha ;-)
That's a lovely model, Cap'n!
...but I do wish this current obsession with cars would die more quickly. F1 in particular is like watching paint dry.
@CapnRex101 Love it! Now I want to see a matching pit-crew, fuel-truck, garage etc in Classic Space styling!

What about the not-too-distant future? Say, next Sunday, A.D.?
Cracking idea for a build there! Fancy doing the rest of the grid? :p
A Blacktron one would look very classic F1...
And don't forget Castle, Pirates, Ninjago, Exoforce, SpongeBob, Star Wars, Minecraft, Fabuland... crumbs there's a lot of potential to mine here!

Ah, you better get a few crews up there to get the moon buggies in shape so you can start a regolithtrack league before you start planning for F1 in space.

Thank you. LEGO competitions for ages 6-12 are pitched perfectly at my level!
Unfortunately, I make very few MOCs. I have the parts, but much of the time and space I might use for MOCs is needed for sets instead.
F1 for the W
That should be an official set! It has much more character and charisma than the Wave Of Ten that they did this year.
